barnbones > Henry J. Allen house designed by Frank Lloy Wright in 1915 in Wichita, KS. Allen was a journalist and later governor of KS. Wright considered this "one of my best" was the last of the Prairie Houses. Carthage marble "water table" (lower base of the house), clay tile roof with a unique ridge, hip ridge and employed a Japanese flavor. Wright was building the Imperial Hotel in Japan at the same time. You can see the front door under the portico. He liked to "hide" the front door so as not to interrupt the line of the front of the house.
barnbones > The garden and koi relecting pond sits just outside the living room and dining room. The house-like building in back was the gardeners house.
barnbones > Wright designed the flower pots, sitting on carthage marble, they are made of cement and crushed oyster shells.
barnbones > Definetly shows the Japanese influence to the house.
barnbones > The upper row of windows are along a narrow hallway with bedrooms off to the side. The higher structure is to one of the bathrooms, referred to as a nostril for helping the house breathe by circulating the air upward and out.
